Sussex Rugby comes to Chichester

So, as the season 2011 draws to a close, Chichestr RFC hosted two of this years Finals at Oaklands park on Sunday, with Chichester II’s (who play in the Hampshire merit league yet qualify for Sussex Knock out, and who are unbeaten so far this season) verses Lewes II in the Sussex Salver; and Heathfield and Waldron verses Eastbourne in the Bob Rodgers Cup – Bob Rodger’s being the RFU President a few years ago and who has donated the Cup to provide further motivation for the strengthening Sussex Rugby Profile.

If The County could access current players with ties to Sussex, The County could in fact put out a Team of current England Internationals, and the strength of the county set up was to be seen on Sunday the 3rd April.

Chichester II after a sticky start where they had possession of the ball, but failed to convert that into points, proved to be too strong for a Gritty Lewes II and the points began to build. Mainly through the Chichester II backs having better running lines and in crossing the gain line and being able to set up platforms from which to score. Lewes II however girded the loins and their pack were awesome in the second half and having camped out on Chichester II’s line for 10 minutes, they forced a penalty try.

Chichester adjusted however, and came out 47- 21.

Heathfield I verses Eastbourne I was not quite up to everyone’s expectations, and despite very good handling and strong physical committement from both teams, the game did not quite spark as was hoped, and at some points it became a bit niggly as well, resulting in yellow cards; however after being dominant for the first half Heathfield were forced back by Eastbourne for most of the second half; yet having posted 19-10 by that stage, Heathfield came out winners 26-10.

Bob Rodgers was there to present the trophy to Heathfield, and the weather helped to round off a great day, which was extremely well hosted by Chichester Rugby Club and the effort they put in to make the day run well was appreciated. It follows on the heels of the Club running the County U12 and Midi tournament a few weeks ago which was also a resounding success.

With the club chasing for a play-off place to meet a Kent side to determine who will be promoted to London SE 3 next season, with London Irish Amateur who are one point ahead, the season run in will be tense.

The Club has also annonced that they are planning to extend the Clubhouse facilities as well to allow for better Corporate and family entertainment, and the extension of the Gym and training facilities.

Great news!
